Frequently Asked Questions

Question Why do you prefer new books? Kart
Answer

We have lots of people ask us why we prefer that donated books be in new condition. There are three main reasons:

1) While preventing contamination completely is impossible, new books are far less likely to contain the very germs that we are trying to keep out of the hospitals.

2) For some children, the books they receive from Kate's Kart are the only books they own.  The gift of a brand new book reinforces to the child that he or she is special and deserving of a gift that no other child has owned.

3) With over 90 volunteers, and 16 hospitals, maintaining the same high-quality standards at each location requires some level of quality control.  By requesting only new books, we can be assured that our minimum level of quality is being met.

Question Can you pass out my pamphlet or bookmark with your books?
Answer No. Due to health regulations and corporate policy, we cannot distribute items from other groups, organizations or individuals (such as homemade bookmarks, pamphlets, get well cards, etc.). We encourage you to contact the hospital directly with your request.

Question What happens to the used books you receive? Book Shelf
Answer We value every single book that is donated to our organization. Very gently used books are placed on a Kate's Kart bookshelf in the waiting rooms of local pediatricians. They are available to the children who are waiting for an appointment to either read and return to the shelf, or take home to keep. We also place gently used books in the emergency room waiting areas for pediatric patients and visitors. Books that have been "loved" longer are donated to other local charities, including SCAN (Stop Child Abuse and Neglect), Boys & Girls Clubs, ARC and church ministries.

Question I would like to volunteer! How do I get started?
Answer The first step to becoming a Kate's Kart volunteer is to complete our online application. Once your application is received, we will schedule a time for you to take the volunteer orientation at whichever hospital(s) you choose. Please visit our Volunteer Introduction page for more information.
