10,000th Book Celebration!
OCTOBER 2009 - Just 16 months after Kate's Kart began rolling, we handed out our ceremonial 10,000th free book to a hospitalized child!
The selected recipient was Austin, a 10-year-old oncology patient going through his 3rd round of chemo at Lutheran Hospital. A few phone calls confirmed that Austin's favorite comic book series was Captain Underpants, and that he only had one or two books in the series of ten. On Monday, October 26, 2009, Kate's Kart co-founder Krista Layman, and a few volunteers arrived in Austin's hospital room with a bouquet of balloons and the whole series of Captain Underpants books.
"I can honestly say that the experience totally solidified why we do Kate's Kart," said Krista Layman. "It makes the countless hours I spend on Kate's Kart each week so worth while. I know for a few moments that Austin forgot why he was in the hospital, and found joy in a cartoon hero who wears only his underwear and a cape."
Sadly, Austin lost his battle with cancer in July of 2011, at the age of 11. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.
